Moola Mantram of Sri Raamayanam

During the war between Sri Rama and Raavana, Raavana’s extremely powerful son, Indrajit, enters the war zone. He initiates Abhichaara Homam (Nikhumbila Homam). If he finishes that, then no one can defeat him. Once he starts the Homam, Vibheeshana (he is aware of Indrajit’s power) warns Sri Rama and Lakshmana that Indrajit should be brought to war immediately without finishing that homam. So, Lakshmana and Hanuma start fighting the army, deployed to protect the Homam performed by Indrajit. Lakshmana doesn’t shoot any arrows towards indrajit as he has not accepted the invitation to fight. This is Dharma Yuddham. So, Lakshmana just keeps waiting and hoping that Indrajit gets up in between without finishing the Homam.
Hanuma beats the army black and blue and they run to Indrajit asking him to protect them from Hanuma. So, Indrajit was forced to get up without completing that Homam. Lakshmana and Indrajit fought for 3 days and finally Lakshmana Shoots an asthram (abhimantrinchina baanam) by saying the following slokam
With that Indrajit gets killed. This is called the Moola mantram of Sri Raamayanam. Lets look at the meaning of that.
If only Sri Raama is a Dharmaatma, Satya sandha, Dasaradha’s son, one with Pourusham (bravery), then Indrajit should get killed with this arrow.

There have been certain allegations on Sri Rama on the above aspects.
Dharmam – Sri Rama killing Vaali was not considered to be as per Dharma as he shot the arrow from behind a tree. If this were not to be as per Dharma then Lakshmana’s arrow would not have killed Indrajit. This act of Sri Rama is probably a bit difficult for us to accept, because of his stature but certainly not against Dharma. This has been accepted by vaali himself in his dying moments.

Satyam – When Sri Rama was leaving Ayodhya to the forests in a chariot, Dasaradha runs behind that asking the charioteer to stop the chariot. Sri Rama instructs the charioteer not to stop it and also says, “If my father asks u why u did not heed to his orders, you mention that you did not hear his words in the noise of the chariot wheels.” Though this is a lie but the purpose of this has been to make Dasaradha upkeep his words given to Kaikeyi.

Daasaradhi – Sri Rama is not a son of Daasaradhi, born like another Human being but born because of the sweet concoction given by the Yagna devatha (allegation). But Sri Rama was born just like another human being sitting in the womb of Kousalya and he is a son of Dasaradha. Once again proved by the killing of Indrajit.

Pourusha – When Sri Rama fights 14000 strong raakshasa army of Khara Dooshana in the forests, he single handedly kills all of them in roughly 42 mins. During that fight Khara (could be Dooshana too) rushes Sri Rama by jumping onto him and Sri Rama wants to create some space to shoot an arrow for which he takes 3 steps back, creates space and then shoots down that Raakshasa with that arrow. This act of Sri Rama was termed as a timid one as one is not supposed to take a step back in a war/fight. But Indrajit getting killed clearly shows that Sri Rama’s act was not related to bravery.

So, Lakshmana killed Indrajit with that one asthram dispelling all allegations against Sri Rama. Indrajit is considered more powerful than Raavan himself. Dharmo Rakshathi Rakshitaha

Sugreevas attitude and behaviour

When Sugreeva and Sri Rama become friends, Sri Rama promises Sugreeva that he would kill Vaali and get his kingdom and wife back. So Sugreeva lands up in front of Vaali’s cave and invites him for a fight, with the confidence that Sri Rama would handle him. He gets beaten black and blue by Vaali and Sugreeva runs back to Rushyamooka Parvatham (mountain) where Vaali cannot enter. When confronted with the question of why he did not kill Vaali, Sri Rama answers that he could not identify Sugreeva as both the brothers were looking alike and he did not want to kill the wrong person. Then he asks Sugreeva to wear a garland made of some nice flowers so that he would be able to identify Sugreeva and kill Vaali and as they say, the rest is history.

Let us look at some of the incidents involving Sugreeva prior to this.
1.    When both Sri Rama and Sugreeva promise to be friends in front of agnihotram (fire), Sugreeva cuts a nice branch from a tree and creates seating positions for him and Sri Rama. Lakshmana would be standing there and Sugreeva doesn’t even offer him a seat. Immediately Hanuma gets another big branch and makes a seating arrangement for Lakshmana and asks him to be seated on that. Is that a big fault? Yes it is. If not, Hanuma would not have immediately made seating arrangements for Lakshmana. Lakshmana is an ardent follower of God (Sri Rama) and so hurting them would hurt God.
2.    When Sri Rama asks where Ravana lives, Sugreeva states that he doesn’t know but says that he would certainly find out once he gets his kingdom and army back. But Sugreeva knows every nook and corner of the entire globe, as he had to run around to escape from Vaali. When Sugreeva had to send the Vaanaras in search of Sita, he sends them in all directions giving them detailed description of the entire path till they reach the dead end including South (that’s where Ravana lived). He must have probably thought that if he provides the whereabouts of Raavana to Sri Rama, then Sri Rama would probably insist on getting Sita back immediately. To be fait to him he must have thought that fighting Raavana without any army is not possible and hence probably did not disclose that information then.
3.    Sugreeva gives a detailed description of Vaali’s strength and states that unless Sri Rama proves to him about his strength, he would not be confident in Sri Rama facing Vaali. As part of his tests, he asks Sri Rama the following.
a.   Huge mountainous skeleton of Dundhubhi (A Raakshasa killed by Vaali) has to be kicked by Sri Rama to a distance of 200 yards atleast. Sri Rama kicks that to more than 1000 yards. Immediately, Sugreeva backs out stating that When Vaali threw this body it was with flesh and blood and so it must have been much heavier than this and so wanted another test.
b.   Vaali could shake on huge tree with his bear arms and so if Sri Rama can bring down that tree with his arrow, then he would be convinced. Sri Rama shoots an arrow and that brings down 7 such trees at one go at lightning speed. That’s when Sugreeva got convinced about Sri Rama’s strength.

Obviously the above are sins, in a way, committed by Sugreeva and so he had to pay for those. He, infact, got away with a very minor punishment of getting beaten black and blue by Vaali the first time around.

Committing sins is one thing and committing sins with the Bhaagavathulu (people loved by God) is a bigger sin and one has to pay for those immediately.

The following is from the third Anuvaaka of Rudram. This is recited whenever we take part in Rudhraabhishekham. There are some spelling mistakes, which have been underlined and most importantly, I could not get the udaarthaas and anudaarthas typed and I shall be pardoned for this mistake.

In a nutshell, the above anuvaaka implies that we should see god in everything and every person including bad people, because God is all pervasive. The above anuvaaka talks about various types of bad people – thieves, dacoits, cheaters, tricksters, robbers, murderers. We are saluting to the God who is present in all these human beings. Abiding by this is probably very difficult than reciting this.

Once Sri Ramana Maharshi was sitting in his hut with couple of his disciples in the late evening time. Two thieves walked into the hut with knives and face masks. Sri Ramana Maharshi immediately got up and welcomed them. The thieves shouted at him saying that they are thieves and that he should be scared of them and sit in the corner, otherwise they would harm him. Unperturbed by that, Sri Ramana Maharshi said, “Why should I be scared of you? You are also God. If you decide to harm me, who am I to stop you?” The thieves asked Sri Ramana Maharshi to turn the other way and Sri Ramana Maharshi did as instructed. The disciples were itching to run out and seek help so that the thieves could be nabbed within no time. But Sri Ramana Maharshi was totally against that and asked them to stay there. One of the thieves hit Sri Ramana Maharshi with a stick on his knees from behind and he fell down on the ground. Having found nothing in that Sanyaasi’s hut, the thieves left the place. But Sri Ramana Maharshi did not have an iota of ill feeling against the thieves and told his disciples that Lord Shiva wanted his body to receive that hit and he is no body to act against that.

Such is the state of great people who believe and feel each and every letter and word and not just recite it.

The story of kabandhudu

After Ravana abducts Sita, Sri Rama and Lakshmana go out in search of Sita in the dense forest of Dandakaaranya. At one point they see a strange creature under a tree. This creature neither has a head nor legs. While they remain bewildered long arms reach them and grab both of them. Then they realize that this creature (a Raakshasa) has its head in the torso with a single eye and the legs are also tucked inside the torso.

Lakshmana realizes that his end is not too far and advises Sri Rama to take care of himself and makes some parting statements. Then the Raakshasa speaks up and states that he is going to eat both of them immediately.

Sensing the danger, Sri Rama immediately instructs Lakshmana to cut the arm of the Rakshasa, in which he got captivated. Both of them with a single stroke cut the arms of that Rakshasa. Seeing this Kabandhudu is shell shocked.

Then the Raakshasa asks them who they are. Lakshmana gives a very quick introduction about themselves (This is one interesting thing in Raamayana. Many characters provide information which is just adequate for that situation. For example in this case Lakshmana doesnt talk about Kaikeyi or Bharatha or losing the kingdom etc). Then the Rakshasa mentions that his name is Kabandhudu and provides more details about him.

“Once upon a time I used to be an extremely handsome person. I was a Kaamaroopi too (he could get the avatar of any creature he wishes). I used to change myself into a horrifying Raakshasa and used to scare all the rishis and munis in the forest. Once a rushi  got upset with my stupid act and cursed me, “You would remain with this same Raakshasa avatar and would not be able to change back.” I got scared and pleaded with the Rushi for a saapa vimochanam (reversal of the curse). “Long time later Sri Rama and Lakshmana would come into this forest and they would cut your arms. That’s when you would regain your original avatar”.

After that I started doing Tapasya for Brahma. I got a boon from Brahma that I would lead a very long life. With this boon I became over confident and waged a war on Indra. Indra used his Vajraayudham and hit hard on my head and my head got tucked into my torso. He hit on my legs and they got tucked into my torso. I was devastated with that and requested him to kill me. He said that Brahma’s words cannot go wrong and left me like that. Then I asked him how I would be able to feed myself without legs to move around. Then he gave me extremely long arms with which I can scout for animals miles away with my arms and eat them. I have been surviving for a very long time and have been waiting for you. Please kill me and perform last rites for my body so that I can regain my original form. With the current form I wont be able to help you much, but once I regain my original form I will certainly be of some help to you in searching for your beloved wife.”

Once Sri Rama and Lakshamana killed him and performed the last rites, Kabandhudu regained his original form and he was the one who suggested that they travel towards Rushya mookha parvatam and make friends with King Sugreeva. He said that Sugreeva will certainly be instrumental in their search for Sita.

Our strengths can become over weakness if they are misutilized. This story very clearly shows how Kabandhudu misused his Kaamaroopi powers to land himself in trouble.
Inspite of that once he got a boon from Brahma instead of utilizing it properly, he went after Indra and landed in a much bigger trouble. With more power comes more responsibility.

Once upon a time a pottery maker used to live in a small village near Srikakulam. This guy used to make his livelihood by making pots, more importantly used to sell them at a price with appropriate profit to ensure that the basic needs of his family are taken care of without being greedy. He was a great bhaktha of Lord Siva. In the same village there used to be a very old temple of Lord Siva. He used to go there frequently as well.

The couple was not blessed with a child for a long time. One day, the husband prayed for Lord Siva and took a vow that he would make a nice pot for the Lord, if Lord Siva gives him a baby boy.

Lord Siva blessed him with a baby boy few months later and the couple was extremely happy. With great dedication and gratitude, the husband started working on a pot. After few days he finally made a nice looking big pot and he was very happy with that and decided to give that to Lord Siva.

One fine day he took that big pot to the temple and wanted to put it inside the Garbha Gudi. He realized that the pot he made was bigger than the width of the door opening. He tried different ways to get the pot inside, but the pot was too big to be taken inside. After spending quite some time in trying to get that inside, he gave up. He became upset that Lord Siva was not accepting his gift. He left the pot outside the door and went to his home. He brought his new born son to the temple and put the baby in that pot. He looked at Lord Siva and said, “If you don’t like my gift and will not accept it, I will also not accept your gift. You take back your gift and after that I will take back mine.”

Saying this he left the kid in the pot and left the temple and went home. When asked by wife he told her that he returned Lord Siva’s gift as Lord Siva did not accept their gift.

When the couple woke up in the morning, they heard a baby crying outside their house. They opened the doors and saw their son at their door step. The husband picked the baby and went inside. When the wife asked him as to how the baby came back, the husband responded, “Lord Siva must have accepted my gift and took it inside and so gave our child back to me.” He did not even bother to visit the temple immediately to verify. Not surprisingly, the pot moved to a place behind the Siva linga in the temple by the time the priests opened the temple in the morning.

Even today, that pot is still present in the temple behind the Siva linga and it can be very easily observed that the size of the pot is bigger than the door opening. People who do not have children should drop something (I forgot what) in that pot with a sincere wish, coupled with faith, and they will be blessed with children.

This place is Sri Mukha Lingam in Srikakulam district. This is also called kotilinga kshetram. Apparently around one crore of siva lingas are present within a radius of some 8 or 10 km of this Sri Mukhalinga Kshetram.

When Hanuma goes to Lanka in search of Seetamma, after searching everywhere and not finding her anywhere gets disappointed. But then decides to search all over again with renewed determination and with a simple change of his mental set up, he immediately finds her under the sisupa vruksham in Ashoka vanam.

He gets down the tree and realizing that she is under great stress with no trust on anyone asks her the following question, knowing fully well that she is seetamma.

To the above question, seetamma responded in the following way.

The above conversation very simple and straight forward. But under the circumstances, there are lots of things to learn from the above conversation. Let’s look at Hanuma’s question first.

·         Talking politely to someone is very important, especially when the other person is under stress and suspicion.
·         By talking about great people like Vasishta, Agasthya, Arundhati etc, it would appeal to seetamma. Since last 10 months in Lanka, Seeta never heard of such things except about Raavana. Based on the appealing factor of the other person, conversation should be initiated so that the opposite person can gain confidence in answering to us.
·         Talking about Devathas, shows the knowledge levels of Hanuma, which would instill confidence in seeta that he is not just another Raakshasa (or Raavana himself) who knows only to flatter Raavana.
·         Though he clearly knows who she is, he still asks her if she is actually her. When we make people provide answers that we know it makes them more confident and they will know that we are not assuming anything on their behalf. This is a very important attribute while speaking. State assumptions, if you make any, rather than just assuming and speaking based on your assumptions.

Obviously that gave lot of confidence to Seeta about Hanuma and she gave her response. Look at the order of her response.
1.    A married woman should always first say whose daughter in law she is.
2.    Followed by whose daughter she is. (I am daughter/son of so and so. Not My father’s name is so and so)
3.    She then states her name, which is less significant than the above two.
4.    Finally, she states whose wife she is. Not who her husband is. Most importantly, it’s not about providing the name of her husband, but more importantly stating an attribute of her husband.

Framing of sentences, order of those are very important, which will make our speaking very pleasant and more importantly correct as per the sanaatana dharmam.

When sita got abducted by Dasagreeva (Raavana), she used to live under the Sisupaa vruksham. Since she refused to live in the palace, Raavana made her stay there in Ashoka vanam. This tree has special medicinal powers by which one does not fall sick. So, Raavana wanted to ensure that Sita doesn’t fall sick so that whenever she changes her mind, she will be in good health.
Raavana used to visit her pretty regularly seeking her consent to abandon Rama. There is a reason why Raavana never tried force on Sita. This will be mentioned in another article soon. Sita always used to place a piece of grass between her and Raavana before responding/talking to him. Multiple explanations have been given for that act of Sita and let me not get into that now.
Anyway, so Sita asked Raavana,
“Don’t you have any one to give you good advices?
If there is someone to advise you, is your problem not listening?
If you listen, do you not attempt to implement those advices?
Where’s your problem?”

The above set of questions is very important for every human being. Unless we Get proper advice, listen to those carefully and understand, implement those, we will not be able to lead a righteous life. Lets look at couple of instances in Raamaayana.

When Sri Rama and Lakshmana realize that Sita is not there, once they return killing Maareecha, Raama goes through multiple feelings at the same time and one after the other – anger, depression, helplessness, hopelessness etc. After some time anger takes over him completely and he says,
If Sri Rama had actually done that everything would have been destroyed. Lakshmana got scared and started pacifying Sri Rama. He reminded Sri Rama of his greatness, his abilities and more importantly his virtues and importance of abiding by Dharma. After listening to Lakshamana, Sri Rama said, “Very well said Lakshmana. I should not leave Dharma aside and destroy the world.” Saying this he immediately got back to normalcy.

This is the greatness of Sri Rama. When he is told about his mistake, he gracefully accepts it irrespective of who tells him and attempts to correct that.

Now, lets look at another character – Raavana. He comes to Maarecha and tells him that he should help him in distancing Sri Rama and Lakshmana from Sita so that he can abduct Sita.
Maareecha is a strange bhaktha of Sri Rama. From the time he got hit by Sri Raama’s Maanavaastram he becomes scared of Sri Rama. He sees Sri Rama everywhere. He becomes a taapasi and lives in continuous fear of Sri Rama and doesn’t want to do anything cruel lest Sri Rama should come back and kill him.
He was the first one to describe Sri Rama with the famous phrase,
Maareecha tries his level best to convince Raavana that he should not attempt at abducting sita. He reminds Raavana about his fate, 14000 raakshasas (including Khara Dooshana) who got killed by Rama alone, Taataki, Soorpanakha etc.
Raavana dismisses him saying that Maareecha is no more a brave Raakshasa and is in fact a timid person and that he would kill him if he doesn’t listen to him to do the deer act.
Maareecha finally yields to him because, he feels that it’s better to get killed in the hands of great Sri Rama than in the hands of Raavana.
Raavana immediately changes his stance and says, “You are a great minister of mine. Very brave and sincere. I am happy that you have accepted.” He is least bothered about the fact that Maareecha is going to get killed.

One should read Raamayana to understand how many statements were made by Maareecha, advising Raavana not to try the foolish act of abducting Sita as that would destroy his entire clan.

Making mistakes is not a problem. But attempting to realize the mistakes on our own or atleast when pointed out by others is an important virtue. Otherwise we will also be donning the cap of Raavana.
