In continuation of my previous post about Satyam and Dharmam, here is one more instance in Raamaayana where Dharmam was not bound by Satyam.
When Sita gets abducted by Raavana, Rama and Lakshmana go towards Pampa river to find Sugreeva, based on the advice of a Devatha. After Hanuman gathers information about Rama & Lakshmana and assures Sugreeva that they have not been sent by Vaali, and that he should make friends with Rama, Rama and Sugreeva become friends (Agni saakshiga).
When Sita gets abducted by Raavana, Raavana’s chariot flies over Rusya Mookha parvatam. This is the mountain where Sugreeva lived after being driven out by Vaali with 4 of his ministers (Hanuma, Jaambavanta, Maindudu, Dvividudu). Seeing the Vaanaras on the mountain, Sita tears a small part of her saree and puts some of her ornaments in that and drops that on the mountain.
When Sugreeva shows those ornaments, Rama and Lakshmana immediately recognize those. At that point of time, When Rama asks where Raavana lives, Sugreeva tells him “I do not know where Raavana lives, but let me assure you that once I get the kingdom, I will have access to so many Vaanara and other resources, that it will be very easy for me to locate Raavana and Sita.”
The above statement is not true. Sugreeva indeed knows where Raavana lives. Infact at a later point of time, after Vaali gets killed and Sugreeva gets the kingdom back, he assembles millions of monkeys and segregates them into 4 groups and sends each of the groups in one direction each. To each of the groups he gives such detailed instructions as to what they can expect to see and at what distance, Rama finds it incredible. He immediately asks Sugreeva, “How come you know each and every place on this entire globe to that precision?”. Sugreeva responds, “When Vaali used to chase me I used to run around this entire globe and I have visited every nook and corner of the earth. That’s how I know every place on this earth.”
So, he did not speak the truth to Rama when he said that he doesn’t know where Raavana lives because he was very much aware that if he discloses the location of Raavana to Rama, then Rama would immediately want to go to Lanka to fight Raavana. Sugreeva knows that without sufficient army it is not possible to fight Raavana. So, to upkeep his Mitra Dharmam, he lied to Rama.

Iam sure everybody knows the Rama had killed Vali and also the method in which Rama had done the same. Most of us, including me before listening to discourses on the same, had a doubt whether the killing was against the rules or the dharma path which Lord Rama had followed. But whatever Rama had done is absolutely right. Ofcourse we are nobody to question the Lord but it is that we are clearing the clutter in the mind.
ReplyDeleteApparently Vali had a varam, a chain, from Indra. If Vali wears this and goes to a fight, the opponents powers will be transferred to him and obviously vali will win. Sugreeva is also equally good but whenever they encountered each other, not even once could sugreeva win. This is because of the same reason. Ofcourse Rama did not know about this. But Rama himself tells that his killing of Vali in such a fashion is not against the dharma when vali questions him minutes before his death.
1) Vali is a Vanara and Rama is a human being. A vanaram can be killed when its Ready/Not Ready/While Running or during hunt. Hence whatever he did is accordingly. Pasham/Vala vesi..maatu..nilabadi nappudu leda parigedutunnapudu, vetaadi
2) Also, kishkinda falls under the purview of Ayodhya and as a follower of the king, when Rama left to forest Bharathudu was made the king, he can kill the guilty..
Every culture has their heros, intelligent and gallent. There are suspense and cheating a so called bad person is not a bad idea, any way! Ulysis did the same. Such stories have mesmarising effect. That is why Ramayana and Mahabharata are called mahakavyas (epics). Obviously, Vali was talking human language, they had marriage and lived like human begins. Perhaps, they are tribals. How, can Rama put forth his argument as Vali was a gaming animal? Rama did not know his subjects - not met these people earlier, also he is no more a representative of the coutry he shoud rule, how can he say kishkida is under the Royal Kings of Ayodhya - King bharatha shoud say this.
ReplyDeleteGood story, but logic does not surpas human concerns. Rama's reasons are derogatory, against democratic principles and burjwa. Only some people represent culture - the elite ones but Vali the tribal is not entited to his logic.
Rama killing Vaali is right from the perspective of Rama helping his friend sugreeva and Rama being an upkeeper of dharma. Rama need not have direct enmity with Vaali to kill him. This is the reason why Rama killed the Raakshasas in the forest who were troubling the sages. Rama vowed to them that he would kill the raskshasas who were not abiding by dharma, even though he doesnt have direct enmity. Similarly, Vaali drove sugreeva out of Kishkinda and grabbed Ruma (Wife of sugreeva). These are against dharma and so Rama is justified in killing Vaali. The only controversial thing is as to why he had to hide behind a tree to kill Vaali. He is capable of killing Vaali facing him directly. Hopefully, I will find some justification for that and till I find that I dont think I should be blaming Sri Rama :)
